    Lorin Maazel

On a rather backdated note, I really enjoyed the Lorin Maazel a week ago. It was rather by accident that I watched it because my mum booked the tickets without either of us realising he was as famous as he is. But it was amazing, the orchestra had lovely tone in the slower parts and were more coordinated than I've heard them normally...I think a good conductor should be one that doesn't try to confuse the players onstage (and man I've seen some really strange albeit fluid styles of conducting which leave me with no impression of the beat whatsoever) He should be trying to capture the mood of the moment and pushing/exciting the musicians as much as possible (which explains his vigorous pointing and gesturing). I guess as a player I've always found the conductor who can draw me into the mood of the music the most useful. For the beat, I've always tended to look at the soloist's feet- you'd be surprised how well those things keep a steady count. haha and I realise there is such a thing as a Singaporean tone. Like some of us, it doesn't take itself too seriously, its sweet yet young without the jaded stain of marginalisation. (which admittedly can also be a very enjoyable thing yum yum Russian Nationalism) But at the same time, its searching for something, perfection? Maturity? I think I have to pay more attention to what I'm supposed to be searching for.
